Revive Your Spirit as Rabbi Dan Ain (Because Jewish) hosts a gathering featuring some of the most eclectic artists converging gospel, hip-hop, blues and jazz improvisation to explore the depths and dimensions of religious music.

The evening will include a Friday night ritual and discussion led by Rabbi Dan Ain on the relevant themes of the season (rebirth, hope, liberation) as well as spiritual music performances from Sir the Baptist and the Fraternal Order of the Society Blues with Jeremiah Lockwood. 

This special pre-holiday event is part of Because Jewish's Friday Night Jam Series. 

Sir the Baptist - Sir has found a way to mix the soul-clapping, organ-laden church sounds of gospel with a bit of pop, a classy dash of old swing (jazz) and a fist full of hip-hop.

Sir uses the power of hip hop’s influence to tell compelling stories to strip away the shame and embarrassment that too often keep people from seeking help. It's from his own life experiences that he draws the most inspiration, but he also uses his music as a vessel to tell the story of others, in hopes that his music will serve as a holistic soundtrack for life - blending spirituality and the streets.

Mining the common ground between his Jewish heritage and immersion in the blues tradition, Lockwood has created a stunningly vital hybrid. He has released a trio of revelatory albums, appeared in the 2010 documentary film Subway Dreams, was awarded the Six Points Fellowship for Emerging Jewish Artists, toured internationally with the bands Sway Machinery and Balkan Beat Box, and was named a Composer Fellow for the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra. 

 The Fraternal Order of the Society Blues pays homage to the music of their teacher, Carolina Slim, aka Elijah Staley. In the last years of his life, Carolina Slim returned to his gospel roots, and the band will dig into some of that gospel material as well. The Fraternal Order of the Society Blues with Jeremiah Lockwood, guitar/vocals; Ricky “Dirty Red” Gordon, percussion; and Ernesto Gomez, harmonica/vocals.
